The well-defined role of every law enforcement officer across the world is to ensure peace and tranquility in the society. The main threat to the peaceful existence of people is crime. Criminals are dubious set of people who do not want to earn their living through legal means. Anybody that believes and practices illegality is a criminal. One of the reasons why they have been extremely difficult to apprehend is that they cover up their deceitfulness with lies that appear truthful. So anyone who does not look beyond the surface will not see their insincerity. In many instances, innocent ones have been arrested and punished while guilty ones walk with proud on the streets. This is a clarion call on law enforcement officers to roll their sleeves and acquire more knowledge to get the best out of their profession. Every evildoing you see in the society today is because of successful lies. The criminals fabricated the lies, embellished them with some traces of truth and served them to their unsuspecting victims. Hence, it becomes very crucial for every law enforcement officer to develop eyes that can spot liars in all circumstances and locations.
The main objective of this book is to teach law enforcement officers how they can identify deception and make deceptive people tell the truth. This book will shed light on how to rely on verbal, vocal and nonverbal expressions in detecting lies. I wouldn’t like you to close your mind to the fact that anything uttered by a suspect is a lie. Research has reported that even in their lies, there are nuances of truth that can be sifted out by an observing person. While doing this, you need not ask them; just beam your searching lens into the statements they have provided and fetch out language inconsistences. Of course, I understand that this is impossible for a person who is new to it. I will provide you with practical steps in which that can be done. Related to this is speech analysis. You can also analyze the speech of suspects to spot out deception. Little regard has always been given to the place of vocal command in lie detection and this can be very detrimental to investigative process. The vocal expression is filled with innumerable messages for anyone who is attentive enough to spot them out. How a person responds to your queries can either vindicate or implicate them. How you can get to know this would be discussed in the book. What will occupy the larger portion of our discussion is how to read the body language of suspects. There are controversies surrounding the reading of body language cues, but I will masterfully engage the topic in a way that the arguments will not take over the learning process. What is most important is that you should not read cues out of context. Baseline and context are the other indispensable factors you should never neglect.
